“Music” O/C by Lev Tsiperson 1920 Russian Avant Garde
Lev Tsiperson was a member of Unovis. Unovis was a short-lived but influential group of artists, founded and led by Kazimir Malevich at the Vitebsk Art School in 1919. Unovis was a Russian anacrogram for Affirmers of the New Art. Tsipperson was represented in the 1992 Guggenheim Exhibit “The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant Garde 1915-1932”. The painting is signed in the lower right corner in Russian. On the verso is written Vitebsk, Unovis, Music and Tsiperson all in Russian. This is a wonderful example of Russian Cubism.
