Jonas Gerard Large O/C Abstract Painting

“To Paint is to Love Again #2” is the title of this very large and exciting oil on canvas painting. It was executed in 1987. Jonas Gerard (1941-2020) was a self-taught, internationally known abstract and representational painter and sculptor. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, he immigrated to New York City in 1955. Gerard began his career in Greenwich Village in the 1960’s. In 1975, his Bicentennial portrait, “We the People” was presented to President Gerald Ford and is now in the Smithsonian collection. Gerard eventually relocated to South Florida. In 1968, he rented a gallery space on what he speculated was an up and coming art district called Los Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Shortly after his arrival, Gerard and a few other local artists founded the Los Olas Art Festival. It was at this time that he ventured into abstract expressionism. He was so impressed with the results of this piece of art, that he added hooks and wires as to be able to hang it either horizontal or vertically. Unframed.
